Conversations softened. Someone opened snacks. Someone else adjusted a hoodie and leaned against the window. It felt like the shift had already begun.

Day 1: Departure

We were on the Sawunggalih night train to Purwokerto, departing at 20:10.

We booked executive class, partly for comfort and partly because we bought the tickets only three days before departure. D-3 during a long holiday is optimistic at best. Many of the cheaper economy options were already sold out. The ticket cost around IDR 380,000 per person one way, which felt fair for a reclining seat, proper legroom, and a quiet carriage.

Executive-class trains are surprisingly comfortable. Wide seats. Clean interiors. Soft lighting. And one small luxury I always forget about until I am onboard. You can order food directly to your seat. Real meals. Hot rice dishes. Tea. Coffee. It arrives neatly packaged while the train moves steadily through the dark.

We arrived at Purwokerto Station at 00:31.

The platform was bright against the quiet night. Not crowded, but not empty either. Our driver was already waiting outside. Efficient. Reach out to me if you want their contact.

But before getting into the car, we did something simple. We brushed our teeth. Washed our faces. Tried to feel human again. And this is where I was genuinely surprised. The station restroom was clean. Brightly lit. Well maintained.

Day 2: Exploring Dieng Plateau

01:00–05:00 | The Climb to the Plateau

By 01:00, we were already on the road from Purwokerto. The city lights faded quickly behind us, replaced by darker stretches of highway. The car moved steadily upward, climbing into Central Java’s highlands. Honestly, I don’t quite remember the details since I fell asleep not long after we hit the road.

Somewhere around 04:00, traffic began building. It was a long holiday weekend, and Dieng had clearly made it onto everyone’s plan. Cars lined up along narrow roads. Tour buses moved cautiously uphill. Motorbikes slipped through impossible gaps. Headlights formed a slow-moving river of white and red. The higher we climbed, the colder it became. By the time we finally reached the plateau, it was close to 05:00.

05:00–07:00 | Sunrise at Pintu Langit

We reached Dieng just as the sky began to lighten. Since it’s too early to check in, we went straight to Pintu Langit. The air was sharp against our cheeks. Cold enough that no one complained about wearing jackets. The horizon shifted slowly from deep blue to pale orange. Despite the holiday crowd, that moment felt surprisingly quiet. After a night of train rides and mountain roads, that sunrise felt like a reward for the effort.

07:00–08:00 | Indomie and Coffee Stop

After sunrise, hunger hit properly. We stopped at a small warung near Telaga Menjer. Plastic chairs, simple tables, and instant noodle packets lined up behind the counter. We ordered Indomie. The bowls came out steaming, and we held them carefully, letting the heat settle into our cold fingers. The noodles were simple and comforting, exactly what you want after a sleepless night and a mountain drive.

I walked over to the café next door and grabbed an iced coffee. Cold, strong, and slightly sweet. The contrast felt strange at first in the chilly air, but it worked. Hot noodles. Cold coffee. Tired but happy.

08:00 – 10:00 | Telaga Menjer

By 08:00, the plateau was fully awake. At Telaga Menjer, the lake sat calm and reflective, mirroring the surrounding hills almost perfectly. Now and then, a ripple from the wind gently disturbed the surface, breaking the symmetry for a second before it settled again.

Small boats were available to explore the lake, but we decided not to take one. Instead, we stood there for a while. Took a photo together. Adjusted our jackets. Squinted a little into the morning light. No rush to do anything more.

Sometimes you do not need to experience a place fully to appreciate it. Sometimes just standing there, quietly admiring the stillness before moving on, feels enough. After a few more lingering glances at the water, we got back in the car and headed to the next stop.

10:00–11:00 | Batu Pandang Ratapan Angin

Around 10:00, we climbed to Batu Pandang Ratapan Angin. The climb up to the viewpoint was short but enough to wake up tired legs. At the top, Telaga Warna stretched below in shifting shades of green and turquoise. The mineral-rich water caught the sunlight differently depending on where you stood.

11:30–15:00 | Early Check-In and Reset

Instead of continuing to Kawah Sikidang as originally planned, we changed course. Our villa confirmed that early check-in was possible. That message felt like a gift. After a night train, a midnight arrival, and a long mountain drive, the idea of another stop felt heavier than it should. So we went straight to the villa near KM 0 Dieng.

Dropping our bags inside felt like relief. Warm showers. Fresh clothes. Silence. Some of us napped immediately. Some lay on the bed scrolling through the sunrise photos from earlier that morning. The room slowly warmed as afternoon light filtered in. Skipping Kawah Sikidang did not feel like missing out.

16:00–18:00 | Souvenir Stroll

Later in the afternoon, we walked around the central area. Small souvenir shops lined the street. Vendors selling local snacks. Fresh produce from nearby farms. The energy felt festive but not overwhelming. Because we were staying near KM 0, we did not have to deal with more traffic. Everything was within reach on foot. That convenience matters more than you expect during peak season.

Day 3: Hike to Mount Prau

Jakarta was still loud when we left.
