It was one of those trips that sounds simple when you plan it, but once you are there, you realize how different it feels from the city you just left behind.

If you are traveling on your own, I strongly suggest renting a car. The drive takes about one to one and a half hours from Makassar City, depending on traffic. The road is paved and accessible by regular car, so you do not need a special vehicle, but public transportation can be complicated. You can technically take local transport to Maros and continue from there, yet coordinating the last stretch and returning to the city can be time-consuming. I’d recommend you rent a car from Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport here.

As we left Makassar, the scenery slowly changed. Urban density faded into open fields and scattered houses. Limestone hills began to appear in the distance, sharp and dramatic against the sky. You can type “Dermaga I Rammang-Rammang” into Google Maps, and it will guide you directly to the small dock in Desa Salenrang. There is a simple parking area near the river.

At the dock, there is a small entrance counter. When I visited in April 2023, the entrance fee was only a few thousand rupiah per person. Parking was around ten thousand rupiah. The main expense is the boat. We paid approximately two hundred to three hundred thousand rupiah for a round-trip boat rental. One boat fits around four to six people, so the cost becomes very reasonable if you share it.

gabrielasubagio.com

gabrielasubagio.com

The boat ride is about twenty to thirty minutes, and it is easily the highlight of the trip. The river is calm, framed by towering limestone walls that rise almost vertically from the water. Some parts feel narrow, as if the cliffs are closing in. The surface of the river reflects the rocks and sky, creating a mirror effect when the water is still. The engine sound echoes lightly between the stone walls.

When we arrived at Kampung Berua, the atmosphere shifted again. The village sits quietly between rice fields and karst formations. Wooden houses line the paths. There are small stalls selling drinks and snacks. Chickens roam freely. It does not feel commercialized. It feels lived in.

We chose not to explore the caves during this visit. There are clear signs pointing to caves such as Goa Kingkong and other attractions, and the trails are visible. You can absolutely go, but I would recommend hiring a local guide if you plan to explore caves. Some paths are uneven, and having someone who knows the terrain makes the experience safer and more informative. Guides are available in the village, and it is also a way to support the local community.

Instead, we spent our time walking through the village and surrounding fields. There are small wooden bridges, rice paddies stretching toward the cliffs, and viewpoints you can climb for a broader perspective of the karst valley.

Because we were on a day trip, timing mattered. I recommend going in the morning. The heat can become intense around midday, especially when walking through open fields without shade. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and enough water. Cash is important because there are no ATMs nearby and digital payment options are limited.

We returned to Makassar in the late afternoon, taking the same boat back along the river. The light had shifted, softer and warmer, casting long shadows across the cliffs. Even though it was just a day trip, it did not feel rushed.

If you want a slower experience, there are simple homestays in Kampung Berua where you can stay overnight. Many travelers say the early morning mist over the karst formations is beautiful. But if you are short on time, a day trip is completely doable and satisfying.

What I appreciated most about Rammang-Rammang was how accessible it is. You do not need extreme trekking or complicated logistics. Just one hour from Makassar, then a boat ride, and you are inside a landscape that feels remote and untouched.

Just one hour from Makassar, Rammang-Rammang offers towering limestone cliffs, a quiet riverboat ride, and a peaceful village experience.

[17,16
18,19
post-799","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-asia","category-indonesia","tag-asia","tag-travel-blog
["GET
